Will Command strips peel my paint?
Short answer: on flat paint, yes. Most apartments use flat paint. Here is which walls are safe, and how to test.

The problem? Most apartments use flat latex paint. It is cheap. It is chalky. It is exactly what a Command strip pulls off.
Remember this: On eggshell, satin, or semi-gloss? Probably fine. On flat or matte? Assume it takes paint off.

Doors and trim are almost always semi-gloss. That is why Command works on doors. Walls are the risk.
Test in a closet first
Before you put a strip on a living room wall:
- Find a spot inside a closet. Behind the door.
- Stick a Command strip there. Same kind you plan to use.
- Wait three days.
- Pull the tab straight down, slow.
- Paint stayed? Good. You see lighter drywall? Every wall in the place is at risk.

How to remove a strip
- Pull straight down along the wall. Not out toward you.
- Go slow. Yanking breaks the tab.
- Heat it first. Hair dryer on low for 30 seconds. Softens the glue. Best trick.
If you already peeled a patch
Do not touch it up with a random paint sample. You will make it worse.
The fix: spackle, sand, repaint the whole wall. A handyman charges $80–150. Your landlord takes it out of your deposit.
The option that does not touch your paint
If the closet test fails, you do not have to choose between holes and peeled paint.
Put the rack on surfaces where paint is not the issue: tile, glass, mirrors, the fridge, semi-gloss doors. No adhesive touches the wall. Nothing peels.
Command strips are fine on semi-gloss and doors. On flat walls? Test first. If the test fails, put the rack on tile or a door.
